Story First
Whether live-action or animation, your movie can have the best actors, the most brilliant composers, the most original story artists and stunning special effects; but if your story isn’t sound from start to finish and through to its core, all of those fabulous elements combined will not turn an okay movie into a great movie.
What I love about the Pixar stories I’ve worked on is their emotional truth, humor, heart and universality, with great characters and story worlds–fantastic and real at the same time. I believe that the elements that made these animated features beloved and compelling are the same for all good stories regardless of medium or demographics. I see no difference between live-action and animation with regard to the principles of great storytelling.
This ‘Story First’ philosophy is the one from which I approach all entertainment enterprises.
